Description of the website

The website of National Institute for Communicable Diseases is a member of the WHO-led project Vaccine Safety Net (VSN).

All communicable diseases information and vaccine safety information on https://www.nicd.ac.za/ is evidence-based and reviewed by experts, including pathologists, scientists, epidemiologists, medical technologists and technicians, and surveillance officers. The information on these pages are reviewed and updated frequently by a multi-disciplinary committee that has been established to ensure that web governance policies remain current, communicated and enforced.

Vaccine safety information is packaged in various ways, including peer-reviewed publications, fact sheets, blog articles, Q&A’s, infographics, posters and videos. The remaining website content is presented in surveillance reports, technical resources and guidelines for healthcare workers, health alerts and statements, and podcasts. 

Website’s sponsorship policy

The National Treasury of South Africa funds primary/chief activities at the National Institute for Communicable Diseases, a division of the National Health Laboratory Service. Specific research undertakings may be wholly or partially funded through external agencies, partners, and donors through technical support or direct funding.  The content provided on this website is not influenced by funders.

Website’s content or editorial policy

The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) is committed to maintaining the privacy and protecting an individual’s/user’s personal information when they visit the NICD website and use NICD mobile applications.

The NICD does not collect any personally identifiable information (PII) when individuals/users visit any of the NICD channels unless they choose to provide that information to the NICD. Any PII that individual’s/users choose to provide is fully protected.
